Madison, Wisconsin 2011; Paris, France 1789

The cops' siding with the protesters in Madison, WI. reminds me of a film I showed in my classes on the French Revolution. While the nobles were living high, the poor and middle class were losing their furniture for non-payment of taxes at a time when there was famine in France. In one scene, a housewife and her friends take her confiscated furniture off the sidewalk and begin putting it back in the house. The sheriff orders a soldier "Arrest that woman!" The soldier hesitates and then says, "What for?" Moral: When the forces of order side with the citizens, all bets are off!
